About Me

I came to counselling fairly late in life which is both good and not so good. Good because I have a lot of experience of life’s hurdles and of the “human condition” which means I can meet clients in their version of reality and really get under the issues that keep them stuck. Not so good because the more clients I meet who understand that change is possible and that life can be everything they want it to be, part of me wishes that I had started years earlier. But this thinking only lasts for a moment as I know I am exactly where I should be, when I should be. Some people are new to counselling or have had a “bad” experience and intuitively I know how hard it can be for them to really confide in strangers so I make the process as easy and as relaxed as possible. I recognise everyone's beliefs are different and I offer a safe, confidential space to be listened to. Sometimes just this in itself is enough for someone to organise and verbalise their thoughts in order that they can move on. But sometimes a client’s issues are more deep rooted and need bringing to the surface before we can deal with them. This may require more thought provoking work with a client. Sometimes however people do have an insight into themselves and why they feel the way they do but again do not know how to move on. I help them discover how. I believe in “standing beside” a client whilst they work things out and learn to live in their new reality but I do not do the work for them. When I first meet a client I make it clear that I can't, and don't, promise miracles. I can however promise honesty, respect and an open mind as well as my skills as a counsellor. I often set homework, be it written or thought provoking as I look for clients to make a permanent change and not just “turn up”, feel better for a little while and then regress back to their old patterns of thinking.
